In recent years, Leeds has continued to surpass expectations in all areas of business, from economic growth to inbound investment and regeneration – and big names continue to look to the city regarding relocation; the latest of which is Channel 4.
Although talks on the relocation of the TV giant are still in their infancy, Leeds join the bid for the organisation’s relocation, alongside Liverpool, Greater Manchester and Sheffield in the hope that the channel will move out of London and call a northern city its home. Channel 4 isn’t the first in recent news to be considering Leeds, either; as luxury fashion manufacturer and retailer Burberry, who are set to relocate 300 head office jobs from the capital, to Leeds only recently placed a £50m project to bring its textile and raincoat manufacturing under one roof via the rejuvenation of Temple Works Mill on hold.
In recent years, Leeds has continued to lead the way for big business occupiers looking to relocate from outside the region, a trend which was seemingly started by the Yorkshire based betting arm of BSkyB; Sky Betting and Gaming in 2010, with great success.
With more emphasis than ever on staff retention and employee wellbeing, it’s no surprise more businesses continue to consider the move, with the staggering difference in the cost of grade A commercial property, house prices and the cost of living playing major roles.
Since the launch of the Northern Powerhouse in 2014, the economy of Leeds has grown by eight percent, exceeding figures on London of just under seven percent over the same period. Leeds also surpasses the capital in terms of job creation rate, with growth figures of 9.5%, which is no doubt in part thanks to the increase in big brands within the region.
One thing’s for sure, these new occupiers, both confirmed and prospective continue to portray a positive future for the city, and we look forward to Leeds progression as a ‘go to’ destination for big business.
