Fantastic Leeds events to celebrate the city

Amidst the recent shockwaves that have rippled through the country following the Brexit result, including the resignation of David Cameron and new prime minister Theresa May’s cabinet shake-up, we thought it was time for some brighter news. With that in mind, we’ve compiled a list of fantastic events coming up in Leeds over the coming months, giving us the chance to celebrate our city and showcase it as the great place to live and work that it is.

Put simply, Leeds is not only the North’s fastest growing city for business, it is also a hub of art, culture and sport with ever improving transport links nationally and internationally – making it the perfect place for any business to be based.

FUAM Graduate Art Prize Show: 3rd August – 1st October


The FUAM Graduate Art Prize Show celebrates and rewards the artistic excellence of the top students at the University of Leeds completing studies in Design and Fine Art. Now in its fourth year, the four finalists will showcase their work at The Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery until 1st October with an overall winner being selected by an esteemed panel of judges in September. The winner will be presented with the award at a ceremony taking place on 28th September.

Leeds Festival: 25th – 28th August


Leeds Festival is one the world’s most recognised and respected music festivals and brings some 75,000 music fans to the area each year. Held at Bramham Park near Wetherby, the festival boasts huge internationally recognised artists as well as new and emerging music talent along with comedy performances from household names. Over past years acts have included The Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac and Oasis with this year’s lineup including Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Bill Bailey and Biffy Clyro.

City Beach: 13th August – 4th September


City Beach brings all the fun of the beach to Leeds city centre. Now in its fourth year, City Beach will transform Millennium Square into a ‘cocoa cabana’ themed area in honour of the 2016 Rio Olympic games with real sand, an official Team GB Fanzone, deckchairs, a fun fair and a big screen perfect for enjoying the summer’s sport. The City Beach Radio will be playing a range of summer music and visitors will be able to sample a selection of delicious treats and refreshment with a seaside theme. Entry to the area is free with individual admission fees for rides and attractions.

Oktoberfest: 6th – 9th October


Leeds will host its first large-scale Oktoberfest event this October. Over four days The Tetley will be transformed with a stunning 2,000 capacity big top tent, filled with traditional food stalls, an oompah band stage and various bars. Hailed as an event to transform Leeds into Germany’s newest city, the focus will be on authenticity with beer being provided by one of Germany’s most popular exports Erdinger, renowned for their weissbiers and dunkels.

Leeds Business Week: 17th – 21st October


For one week each October, Leeds Business Week brings together over a hundred speakers to share their knowledge and ideas and inspire the city at over 100 events. Not only is Leeds Business Week filled with speaking events from industry leaders, designed to help business owners at all levels, it also provides a perfect platform for business owners city, county and country wide to meet. Run in associated with The Yorkshire Mafia, events include breakfasts, masterclasses, and talks.

30th Leeds International Film Festival: 3 – 17th November


Leeds’ 30th International Film Festival will see over 300 film screenings taking place across 15 days in November at 30 locations. As part of the special anniversary of the event a range of new venues will be announced in early September, joining regular favourites including Leeds Town Hall, Hyde Park Picture House, City Varieties and Left Bank Leeds. The biggest Film Festival in England outside of London, the event showcases a wide range of films including some of the most anticipated and acclaimed films of the year, new discoveries from international and independent filmmakers, forgotten gems and celebrated classics, documentaries and low budget independent features and cult and fantasy films.
