MIPIM 2016

Last week saw the return of Cannes based international real estate event MIPIM, now in its 27th year. Comprising of professionals from 89 countries spanning business services, investment, developers, architects and more, the event brought together the most influential players from all international property sectors.

Those in attendance included White Rose Office Park owner David Aspin of Munroe K, who has spoken of the effect the Northern Powerhouse had on the event and the impressive presence of Leeds City Region during the week.

With the ‘Northern Powerhouse’ being very much the political buzzword of the moment, forming an integral part of the year’s recent budget, it was clear to see the impact this had on the event. Speaking on this subject David commented:

“I felt that all the constituents from both the public and private sectors seemed to be pulling together to push Leeds forward as an integral part of the powerhouse of the North…”

2016 saw the largest ever delegation of sponsors for Leeds City Region at MIPIM across both the public and private sectors. A key part of presenting a united front at the event in order to focus on delivering ‘smart growth’ for the region, building on the strong presence seen at last year’s event. Speaking of the City Region’s presence at MIPIM 2015, Roger Marsh OBE, Chair of LEP, commented:

“The City Region’s strong presence highlighted the united ambition of both the public and private sectors; gaining the attention of developers, occupiers and investors from across the globe including China, The Netherlands, Canada and America.”

Leeds City Region focused their activity at MIPIM 2016 on a programme of panel discussions and breakfast meetings, emphasising market confidence and highlighting why now is the right time to events and relocate to the region.

In addition, Leeds City region formed part of a collaborative Northern Powerhouse stand that was developed in conjunction with the core cities in the North of England. By day three of the event, it was clear that the North was taking shape as a single entity, with events for Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool often overlapping in a coordinated focus on infrastructure and skills.

Giving final word on the event, David stated:

“I was incredibly impressed by Leeds’ presence at the event; the representation of Leeds Council was 60 strong, and their stand was excellent.”
